Pioneer Focus: Tina Oprean

PEDIGREE: This week’s Pioneer focus goes to junior track and field athlete Tina Oprean for her record breaking performance last weekend at the Kent State University Tune-Up meet and this weekend at the GLIAC Championships.

Oprean, who was injured at the beginning of the indoor season, was able to capture the record in the mile after finishing second among 39 competitors last Saturday Feb. 16. Her time of 5:09.48 bested the record her teammate Maddie Schuler set only a month ago.

Then yesterday at the GLIAC Championships Oprean ran the mile as apart of the distance medley relay team that ran a record-setting pace by finishing with a time of 12:03. The team of Mattison Rankin, Hannah Boss, Ashton Avery and Oprean broke the 13-year-old record of 12:11 by a full eight seconds, making that two records in two weeks for Oprean.
