Volleyball briefing: Pioneers continue strong start to season

Malone took their undefeated record of 13-0 to the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational on Friday Sept. 17 and Saturday Sept. 18 to take on Goshen (IN), Indiana Wesleyan Bethel (IN) and Trinity International (IL).

The Pioneers won their first match up against Goshen (IN) and second match up against Indiana Wesleyan on Friday in five sets each. The Pioneers then suffered their first loss of the season to Bethel (IN) in five sets on Saturday 14-25, 26-24, 25-19, 19-25, 11-15.

With a meager 9-6 record, the Pioneers may have overlooked Bethel College going into the match.

“You can’t underestimate any opponent,” said Tanya Hockman, volleyball head coach.

Leading the way for the Pioneers in the loss was Jennifer Gahagan who had 18 kills, 12 digs and five blocks. Jackie Schwamberger volleyed up 48 assists and added two aces.

After the loss the team found their way against Trinity International by winning in four sets 25-14, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19. In the victory Lori Gale slammed 15 kills and added 12 digs while Hannah Haver had 10 kills and nine digs.

After the invitational the Pioneer’s record stood at 16-1 going into AMC play. They made quick work of both Ursuline and Houghton (NY).

The Pioneers beat Ursuline in three sets 25-9, 25-16, 25-23 on Tuesday Sept. 21 then three days later defeated Houghton 25-16, 25-12, 25-12.

Against Ursuline Gahagan led the Pioneers, once again, with 15 kills and four blocks while Haver added 10 kills.

Off the start of a new winning streak, the Pioneers continued to roll against AMC opponent Roberts Wesleyan (NY) with their 19th win. After dropping the first set to the Raiders, the Pioneers rallied to take the next three sets for the win (17-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-23).
In the match the Pioneers put up terrific stats as Gahagan, Gale and Haver all recorded at least 10 kills and Gahagan, Gale and Schwamberger all posted at least 10 digs.

With the win the Pioneers are 3-0 in conference play and 19-1 overall. Malone’s next match up comes against cross town AMC rival Walsh on Tuesday. The game will be streamed live on Malone’s athletic website.
