The Pioneers began their 2011 campaign with a stunning 40-34 overtime thriller against Division II Tiffin University at Fawcett Stadium on Thursday night. Trailing 27-20 after a fumble near the Pioneer’s end zone, Malone was forced to fight back. With less than a minute remaining in regulation junior running back Emil Chambliss tied the contest on a three yard touchdown run. The touchdown came after a 12 play, 73-yard drive.
As they went into overtime, both teams scored on their opening possession. Chambliss scored for the Pioneers on an eight yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Will Szpor. The Dragons started with the ball in the second overtime, but were unable to score and turned the ball over to the Pioneers on an interception by freshman defensive back John Boston.
Four plays into the Pioneers’ possession in the second overtime, speedy freshman running back Malik Felton produced the winning dagger on his 14-yard scamper into the end zone. The stunning victory lifted the Pioneers to 1-0 on the season and dropped the Dragons record to 0-1.
