The return of pumpkin treats across campus means one thing: fall is here.
Students are excited for what the change in season brings: football games, cooler weather, fall clothes, and of course all things pumpkin.
But why do we have this love for pumpkin?
Asking students provided many answers as to why we are passionate about this seasonal treat.
Junior communication arts major Marcus Mayo explains that he thinks our love of pumpkin is associated with the fall season.
“I like carving [pumpkins] for Halloween,” said Mayo, referring to the time of year.
Pumpkins are native to the Americas and were first cultivated and cooked by the Native Americans long before the Europeans arrived, according to www.allaboutpumpkins.com.
The tradition of cooking with pumpkin has been passed down from generation to generation and continues amongst our fellow students.
Senior youth ministry major Katie Radnich loves pumpkin and fall. Her passion for baking with pumpkin was evident as she excitedly explained how to substitute pumpkin into a boxed cake mix.
Radnich said that substituting one can of pumpkin for all wet ingredients in a boxed cake mix will make a delicious pumpkin cake. Simply follow the baking directions on the box.
The Hoover Dining Commons is joining in on the pumpkin action as well. In recent weeks they have been serving pumpkin bars with cream cheese frosting and mini pumpkin tarts which are wonderful personal size pumpkin pies.
A more recent tradition associated with this time of year are fall specialty drinks at coffee shops.
On Sept. 4 Starbucks launched its fall drink line and social media sites were buzzing about it. Malone students were excited to see this seasonal drink back in action.
Senior integrated language arts major Megan McAbee is a barista at the Washington Square Starbucks and can attest to the pumpkin spice craze first hand.
“It’s been crazy at Starbucks,” said McAbee, who worked on Sept. 4, the day of the fall drink line’s return. “A lot of people didn’t know it was out [yet] and added it to their order.”
Since pumpkin spice returned, McAbee said that her Starbucks store has doubled its sales. It’s a constant flow of pumpkin drinks, she added.
She explained that pumpkin spice lattes are something everyone knows about, even people who don’t normally go to Starbucks. She said it’s a national phenomenon. Starbucks has a webpage and hashtag devoted to this specialty drink, #itsfallwhen.
It’s easy to see why people love pumpkin spice lattes; it’s like fall in a mug, said McAbee. Starbucks’ pumpkin spice latte is a delicious, warm, sweet drink flavored with the spices of fall and notes of pumpkin finishing with a hint of coffee.
McAbee added that customers can ask for pumps of pumpkin to be added to other menu items. She suggests adding a pump of pumpkin to chai tea lattes.
But Starbucks is not the only place pumpkin spice drinks are served.
Local coffee shop Muggswigz Coffee & Tea Co. also serves drinks focused around this time of year. Specialty drinks include pumpkin pie lattes and smoothies amongst others.
Muggswigz is passionate about coffee. They roast their own sourced coffee in store, according to their website. This attention to detail is evident in how they create their drinks. The Muggswigz pumpkin pie latte is first a coffee drink that finishes with layers of pumpkin and spice.
Junior Bible and theology major Avery Linn said her favorite pumpkin treat is a pumpkin smoothie from Muggswigz. Linn has made Muggswigz’s pumpkin smoothie a fall tradition since moving to Canton to attend Malone.
Malone’s Froggy’s and Regula cafés are also a part of the pumpkin drink market.
Junior youth ministry major Joey Frangos works at Froggy’s café. Frangos confirmed that Malone students order a lot of pumpkin drinks. The new trend amongst students, he said, is to order iced pumpkin lattes.
No matter the reason, students love pumpkin and are glad to see it back. In fact, as this article was being finish Linn and Radnich were baking pumpkin muffins for their theology class.
