PEDIGREE: This week’s Pioneer focus goes to junior middle hitter Lauren Townley for her leadership and performance in the NCCAA East Region Championship game on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Osbourne Hall.
In the four-set victory over Roberts Wesleyan ( 25-22, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-17) Townley was a force in the attack for the Pioneers. She helped lead volleyball to the program’s third NCCAA East Region championship by registering a team-high 15 kills and four blocks (three solo) in the championship game.
Overall Townley has also been an important cog for a 22-10 (11-7 GLIAC) Pioneer volleyball team as she leads the team with 269 kills and 83 blocks total.

Q: Favorite food?
A: My grandma Taylor’s beef and noodles. They’re so good!
Q: What is on your playlist?
A: Timeflies, Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa and Justin Bieber.
Q: Favorite athlete?
A: Hmm, it’s a tie between Misty May Treanor, Kerri Walsh Jenning and USA softball pitcher Jennie Finch.
Q: Something most people don’t know about you?
A: Something people don’t know about me is even though I’m really crazy and obnoxious on the court, I’m a really shy person. Oh and I love taking pictures. They capture the moment.
Q: Most embarrassing moment?
A: My most embarrassing moment was when I had hit a ball that I thought was a kill and I started celebrating like crazy just to find out that I had hit the ball out of bounds. Or whenever I fall down. I fall/flop a lot.
Q: Favorite aspect of volleyball?
A: My favorite aspect of volleyball is the adrenaline rush I get after someone gets a huge kill, block, ace or dig. I love the feeling.
Oh, and winning of course — that’s another favorite aspect.
Q: What are the weekends like being a volleyball player?
A: Weekends this season involved a lot of traveling; we made a trip that was close to 9 hours! Sunday was my chill day because it was the only day I got to sleep!
Q: Who is your role model and why?
A: My mom and my dad are both my role models. They have always pushed me to better myself but have never done it to the point where I hated my sport. They’re my biggest fans and I’m really thankful that I’ve had such supportive people in my life.
Q: Favorite fast food outlet?
A: Taco Bell for sure! We always make late night trips!
Q: Best and worst part of college athletics?
A: Best: I’ve made friends that I will never forget. They’re not only my teammates, they’re my sisters and they have gotten me through so many things that I’ve faced.
Worst: Preseason and 6:30 a.m. workouts — I’m not a morning person.
