PEDIGREE: This week’s Pioneer Focus goes to sophomore track and field athlete Maddie Schuler for her record-breaking performance in the mile last Friday, Jan. 24.
In the non-scoring Youngstown State University Invitational, Schuler was able to garner the record by finishing fifth out of 24 runners in the mile. Her time of 5:11.78 broke a 16 year mark and bested one of the Pioneers’ all-time women’s track and field athlete’s mark by nearly a full second.
Leslie Christopher was the one who previously set the record in 1997 by running the mile in 5:12.28 before Schuler’s record-breaking performance last Friday night.
