Pioneer Focus: Nate Davis

PEDIGREE: This week’s Pioneer Focus goes to senior Nate Davis for his outstanding play over spring break and for his remarkable singles and doubles winning streaks.

Over the tennis team’s spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina, Davis stood out among the rest of the competition by posting a perfect 7-0 singles and doubles record. His perfect record was never in any real jeopardy, as he dominated his matches by winning them all in straight sets.

Davis, the #2 singles player for the Pioneers, has now won an incredible 11 straight singles and doubles matches, a record that dates back nearly a month ago.

With his strong play leading the way, the Pioneers have been able to improve its record to 7-7 for the season.

Get to know the Pioneer who hasn’t lost since early February….

Q: Favorite food?

A: Pizza for sure. Dominoes, Papa John’s, East of Chicago, or Digiorno; it doesn’t really matter. Bacon and BBQ chicken are my top choices.

Q: Best coach you have ever had?

A: My dad, he is the one that got me into tennis and taught me what it takes to win. He always pushed me to be my best and play to my potential even if I didn’t like it at the time. He paid for me to play as many tournaments as I wanted. I would not be the player I am today if it wasn’t for his coaching throughout my life.

Q: Favorite artist/musician?

A: I can’t say I have a favorite, anything from Aviici to Paramore to John Mayer and Josh Groban; it’s all awesome.

Q: Something most people don’t know about you?

A: My parents immigrated from South Africa, sooo I am African American per se.

Q: Favorite aspect of tennis?

A: So many different things;  hitting winners is pretty awesome. It’s pretty much showing my opponent that I’m better than they are.

Q: Favorite YouTube video?

A: Either Kid History or the Taylor Swift goat version!

Q: When and what was your best spring break, and why?

A: This year for sure. Besides going undefeated in singles and doubles, we had such an awesome time as a team. Everyone got to know everyone else really well and we all became a big family.

Q: Favorite fast food outlet?

A: Wendy’s because you can’t get much better than the Baconator.

Q: Best and worst part of college athletics?

A: Best part is playing such great competition and getting better each year. Plus we get to go to Hilton Head for spring break, which has been wicked fun. The worst is probably 6 a.m. work outs and Friday night practices… but hey, I guess it pays off right?

Q: Least favorite rule at Malone?

A: Visitation for sure….I don’t see what is so ungodly about hanging out with a girl before 5 p.m.

Q: Coolest nickname you have ever received?

A: Deezey from Joss, my doubles partner last year.

Q: Facebook or Twitter?

A: I’d take Facebook over Twitter, but it’s close. I like it when Tiger Woods tweets because it makes me feel like he’s texting me.
