A lot goes into publishing an online newspaper. Stories need to be planned, written, and edited for style and content. Photos need to be taken. Videos need to be produced and edited. And there’s even more to the process that would be arduous to explain.
A lot of people are needed, even to put out seven or eight stories a week. I am proud of this year’s staff for doing a wonderful job so far, but we are all being stretched to the limit.
You may have noticed, if you read often, that many of the authors of stories are also editors. Several editors have been writing one story or more every week in addition to all of their planning and editing work. It’s not easy!
We are always looking for more writers to help spread out the responsibilities and produce more stories than we are currently putting out. By the end of last year, we were steadily publishing two stories or more every day, but losing a big chunk of our senior staff members knocked the numbers down a bit.
We want to do more—to write more stories and cover as much news and as many topics of interest as we can—but to accomplish that, we primarily need more writers.
Interested? If you like to write, we’d love to have you. Experience is not needed—we’ll help you learn all you need to know (although if you do have some experience, that would be great too!).
We meet every Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Story Development room, which is in the basement of the library (the room with a big TV and comfy chairs and sofas). Please feel free to join us for a meeting and find out how you can contribute. Or, if you have more questions, talk to a staff member (the list can be found here—chances are you know at least one of us!).
We’d love to see you soon!
