Q&A with resident director Chris Arney

Chris Arney is the resident director of DeVol Hall. He graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University two years ago and was previously an RD at Waynesburg University.

Aviso: What brought you to Malone?

Arney: I went to Indiana Wesleyan University, which is in the central-northern part of Indiana, and I was an RA there for a year. Then they had this position called assistant resident director. I love residence life, I love working with students, and I knew that I wanted to be a resident director after I graduated. I applied to a bunch of places after I graduated, then I actually got a job at Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania. I loved the job, but the fit wasn’t good for me at that institution. I was

looking for jobs at some other similar schools, and then this past year the position here opened at Malone, and I knew Kelli Meyers, the RD in WWF. She actually was a resident director at Indiana Wesleyan when I was a student there. That connection kind of brought me here, and I really bought into the mission of Malone. People really seemed to love it here, people love working here, and I just knew it would be a good place to be.

Aviso: Do you have a favorite book?

Arney: I would say favorite fiction would definitely be Lord of the Rings. And this is still fiction, but it’s more of a get-you-deep-thinking kind of book: C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce.

Aviso: Who inspires you?

Arney: I would say my mom. She never went to college. [She] and my dad were both very young when they had me, but she always worked when I was little and growing up and everything, and she did schooling part time to get her associate’s degree in nursing. She’s actually going back now to finish her bachelor’s. The dedication she had for my family but also for her own education and. . .just to work really hard to provide for us.

Aviso: Are you into sports? What is your favorite sport to play?

Arney: I like playing sports, but I was not an athlete in college. When I was in high school, I swam, I did cross country for a year, and I played tennis. So, I would say I’m an athletic person, but I’m not an athlete. I really like ultimate Frisbee. I feel like it’s just a really good game to play. You can play with people that are not athletic; you can play with people that are super competitive. It’s just a good friendly game that you can get anybody into.

Aviso: What do most people not know about you?

Arney: I’m usually pretty open. I’m not really afraid to answer any questions. I usually wear my emotions on my sleeve, so usually people know how I’m doing and everything. Here’s a weird thing about me. I had a couple friends in high school that were really good at Dance Dance Revolution and they got me into it, so I’m really good at that game. I haven’t played it in four years, but I bet I could pick it up easily again.
