The Sports Marketing Association (SMA) is an auxiliary group that supports the sport management undergraduate degree. While it is about sports management, the association is open to any major. Members learn to market themselves and network in the sport management field locally and nationally.
The student leaders of the association include Charles Dickens, Phil Fisher and Heather Papp, all senior business administration majors, Alexa Holztrager and Brian Adkins, senior sport management majors, and Nick Astalos, junior business administration major.
Last fall the group spoke with a Cleveland Cavaliers executive, got a tour of what a game looks like behind the scenes and stayed to watch the game. The association also went to a Lake Erie Monsters game after getting a tour and speaking with an executive on how to market yourself and network to get established in the sport management field.
Recently, they Skyped with an inside sales manager of the San Diego Padres. They also made plans to have him come to Malone to speak more about his experience with the Padres. The club holds activities to fundraise like the three on three basketball event earlier this year.
Mark Bankert, assistant professor of sport management and adviser, said, “We would be excited for anyone who would be interested in SMA to become a member.”
